Update 28 Awakening Notes
Tiger fruit (reworked Leopard) does NOT have an awakening as of Update 28/29 — despite being the current meta PvP king, its base kit is powerful enough without awakening. Kitsune follows the standard fragment cost structure (Z: 500, X: 2000, C: 3000, V: 4000, F: 2000). Dough Awakened remains the gold standard for PvP — its move rework in earlier updates still holds up as one of the best awakenings in the game.
What is Fruit Awakening?
Awakening is an endgame system that lets you upgrade your Devil Fruit's moves into stronger, flashier, and often completely reworked versions. An awakened fruit isn't just a stat boost — the moves change visually, mechanically, and in terms of damage output. Some fruits go from mid-tier to S-tier after awakening (looking at you, Dough).
To awaken a fruit, you need two things: Fragments and Raid completions. Both require significant time investment, so you want to awaken the right fruit first.
As of Update 28 (Feb 2026), the following fruits can be awakened: Flame, Ice, Light, Magma, Quake, Buddha, Dark, String, Rumble, Dough, and a few others added in recent patches.
How Awakening Works — Step by Step
Step 1: Obtain Fragments
Fragments are the currency used to awaken individual moves. You don't awaken the whole fruit at once — you awaken each move separately, and each move costs a different number of Fragments.
Ways to earn Fragments:
| Method | Fragments per Run | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Raid (completion) | 250–1,000 | Most reliable source |
| Boss drops | 50–250 | RNG-dependent |
| Sea Events | 100–300 | Random encounters at sea |
| Bounty/Honor rewards | Varies | PvP-related |
| Ship farming (Third Sea) | 150–300 | Destroying enemy ships |
Step 2: Complete Raids
Raids are wave-based challenges you access through the Raid NPC on specific islands. To start a raid, you need a Raid Chip (dropped by bosses or bought with Fragments). Each raid corresponds to a specific fruit — you must complete the raid for the fruit you want to awaken.
Here's how a raid works:
- Get a Raid Chip for your fruit (e.g., Flame Chip for Flame awakening)
- Talk to the Raid NPC (located at the Castle on the Sea in the Third Sea)
- Enter the raid — it has 5 islands/stages
- Clear all enemies on each island within the time limit
- Defeat the final boss on Island 5
- Receive Fragments as reward
⚠️ Warning: Raids are hard. Like, genuinely difficult. Island 4 and 5 have enemies in the Level 1500–2000 range that hit like trucks. Don't attempt a raid solo unless you're Level 1800+ with a solid build. Bring friends — raids scale but having 2–3 players makes them dramatically easier.
💡 Pro Tip: You can farm Raid Chips from bosses without entering raids. Stock up 5–10 chips before you start raiding so you can do multiple runs in one session. This is way more efficient than farming one chip, doing one raid, farming another chip, etc.
Step 3: Awaken Individual Moves
After accumulating enough Fragments, talk to the Mysterious Entity NPC (found in the same location as the Raid NPC). Select your fruit and choose which move to awaken. Each move awakens independently.

Other Awakenable Fruits (Approximate Total Costs)
| Fruit | Total Fragments | Worth Awakening? |
|---|---|---|
| Light | ~14,500 | Meh. Awakened Light is decent but not meta. |
| Dark | ~14,500 | Yes, if you use it for PvP. |
| String | ~14,500 | Niche. Good for combos. |
| Quake | ~14,500 | Solid for PvP. |
| Rumble | ~14,500 | Underrated. Good AoE. |
Awakening Priority List
So you've got limited Fragments and want to know where to spend them. Here's the priority order:
If You're a PvE Player (Grinding/Bosses)
-
Buddha — Awakened Buddha is the best grinding fruit in the game, bar none. The enhanced transform gives you even more range and the new moves have massive AoE. Awaken this first if you grind a lot.
-
Magma — Awakened Magma's floor puddle mechanic zones entire areas and the passive damage is great for mob clearing.
-
Flame — Awakened Flame's Blue Flame V move does huge AoE damage. It's a solid budget option.
💡 Pro Tip: If you already have Buddha, awaken the V move (Transform Enhanced) first. It gives you a bigger model size, which means even more melee range. The other moves are nice but the transform upgrade is the real power spike.
If You're a PvP Player
-
Dough — Awakened Dough is the single biggest PvP power spike from any awakening. The stun chains become absurdly long. Pastry River (C) + Piercing Clothesline (V) make Dough a PvP monster. This is the #1 awakening priority for PvP.
-
Ice — Awakened Ice's Frozen Domain covers a massive area and the Ice Dragon has great combo potential.
-
Quake — Awakened Quake has surprising PvP utility with its area denial moves.
Don't Waste Fragments On
- Light awakening — It's... fine. But you're spending 14,500 Fragments on "fine" when Dough and Buddha exist.
- String awakening — Very niche. Only good if you're specifically a String PvP main.
- Any fruit you don't plan to keep — Awakening progress is tied to your character, not the fruit. If you eat a different fruit, you lose all awakening progress on the old one.
⚠️ Warning: Awakening progress is lost when you switch fruits. Do NOT awaken a fruit you're planning to trade or replace. That's 14,000+ Fragments down the drain.
Awakened vs. Unawakened: Damage Comparison
Here are some concrete numbers showing how much awakening matters:
| Fruit | Move | Unawakened Damage | Awakened Damage | Increase |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Dough | V (Clothesline) | ~3,200 | ~6,800 | +112% |
| Buddha | X (Twilight Rush) | ~2,800 | ~5,200 | +86% |
| Magma | V (Meteor Volcano) | ~4,100 | ~7,500 | +83% |
| Flame | V (Blue Flame) | ~3,500 | ~6,200 | +77% |
| Ice | C (Frozen Domain) | ~3,000 | ~5,400 | +80% |
The damage increase alone is significant, but the real value is in the changed mechanics — longer stuns, bigger AoE, new movement options.
Fragment Farming Guide
If you need Fragments fast, here's the most efficient method:
- Stock up on 5+ Raid Chips by boss farming (Don Swan and Awakened Ice Admiral are the best chip sources)
- Find 1–2 raid partners on Discord or in-game
- Run raids back-to-back for ~1,000 Fragments per completion
- Between raids, do sea events for bonus Fragments
With a good group, you can earn 4,000–5,000 Fragments per hour of focused raiding. That means a full fruit awakening (14,500 Fragments) takes about 3–4 hours of efficient farming.
💡 Pro Tip: Ship farming in the Third Sea is a decent solo Fragment source. Destroy enemy ships at sea for 150–300 Fragments each. It's slower than raids but you can do it while grinding mobs for XP. Multitasking.
