Trait System Explained: Best Traits for Every Unit Type
Traits are the most impactful system in Anime Defenders that new and intermediate players consistently undervalue. A Shadow Dragon without a trait does 320K DPS. That same Shadow Dragon with an Apex trait does 850K DPS. We're talking about a 165% damage increase from a single system. Nothing else in the game comes close to that kind of power jump.
But the trait system is also one of the most resource-intensive and RNG-dependent mechanics to engage with. Roll wrong and you burn through hundreds of Trait Crystals with nothing to show for it. Roll smart and you'll have a team that punches way above its weight.
This guide covers everything: how traits work, what each trait does, which traits are best for each unit type, and when to stop re-rolling.
How Traits Work
Unlocking
Trait rolling unlocks at Level 20. Before that, your units run traitless — which is fine for Story Mode but a massive handicap in Infinite Mode.
At Level 50, the full trait pool becomes available. Before Level 50, only Basic traits (Apex, Tank, Speedster) are rollable. Emperor and other advanced traits require Level 50.
Rolling a Trait
- Go to your Unit Collection
- Select a unit
- Tap "Roll Trait" — costs 1 Trait Crystal per roll
- The trait is randomly selected from the available pool
- You can Lock a trait you like (free) or Re-roll for a new one (costs another Crystal)
Warning: When you re-roll, the previous trait is GONE. There's no undo. If you have a decent Emperor trait and re-roll hoping for Apex, you might end up with Tank instead. Only re-roll if you're genuinely willing to lose what you have.
Trait Rarity and Drop Rates
| Trait | Drop Rate | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| Apex | 8% | +40% DMG |
| Emperor | 12% | +25% DMG, +15% Range |
| Tank | 25% | +50% HP, -10% DMG |
| Speedster | 20% | +30% ATK Speed |
| Guardian | 15% | +30% HP, +10% DEF |
| Berserker | 10% | +35% DMG, -20% HP |
| Null | 10% | No effect (trait slot wasted) |
Apex is the rarest useful trait at 8%. Statistically, you need 12-13 rolls to have a 50/50 chance of getting Apex. For a 90% chance, you're looking at roughly 28 rolls — that's 28 Trait Crystals on a single unit.
Pro Tip: The Null trait (10% chance) does literally nothing. If you roll Null, always re-roll immediately. There's no scenario where keeping Null is correct.
Trait Breakdown — What Each One Actually Does
Apex (+40% DMG)
The king of traits. Pure damage amplification with no downside. Best for:
- Primary DPS units: Shadow Dragon, Storm Titan, Crystal Mage
- AoE clear units: Lava Admiral (40% more AoE damage is massive)
- Frost Empress: The +40% DMG also increases her slow from 35% to 50%
Apex is the correct trait for about 70% of units. When in doubt, Apex is the answer.
Emperor (+25% DMG, +15% Range)
The versatile choice. Less raw damage than Apex but the range bonus is genuinely impactful on specific units:
- Celestial Qi Master: The range increase extends the healing aura. This is the ONE unit where Emperor beats Apex.
- Lightning Sage: Longer range means chain lightning reaches further, hitting more targets per cast.
- Spirit Fox: Buffer aura covers more teammates with the range boost.
Emperor is optimal on support/utility units where range directly multiplies their value.
Tank (+50% HP, -10% DMG)
A trap for DPS units, but legitimately good for specific roles:
- Iron Golem: Already a tanky unit, Tank trait makes it nearly unkillable. Good if you're using it as a physical blocker.
- Blood Demon: The lifesteal scales with HP, so more HP = more healing. Tank trait actually makes Blood Demon tankier AND heal more.
- Not for DPS: Never put Tank on Shadow Dragon, Storm Titan, or any primary damage dealer. The -10% DMG reduction is unacceptable on your carry.
Warning: Tank trait reduces your damage by 10%. On a DPS unit doing 800K DPS, that's 80K DPS lost. Multiply that across an entire Infinite Mode run and you're looking at millions of damage you didn't deal. Don't do it.
Speedster (+30% ATK Speed)
Underestimated by most players. ATK Speed is a different damage multiplier than raw DMG, which means it stacks multiplicatively with other bonuses:
- Dark Samurai: Already has fast base attack speed. Speedster pushes it into absurd territory — more hits per second than any other unit.
- Lava Admiral: Faster Eruption cycles. 30% faster AoE clear is no joke in high-density waves.
- Frost Empress: Faster attacks = more frequent slow application. Actually a viable alternative to Apex on Frost Empress.
Speedster is the second-best DPS trait after Apex for units with strong per-hit effects or fast base attack speeds.
Guardian (+30% HP, +10% DEF)
Mostly a PvE safety net. The DEF stat reduces damage taken from enemy AoE abilities:
- Decent on frontline ground units if your healing can't keep up
- Worse than Tank for pure survivability, worse than everything else for damage
- Niche pick. You'll re-roll this in most cases.
Berserker (+35% DMG, -20% HP)
High risk, high reward. The damage is close to Apex (35% vs 40%) but the -20% HP makes your unit fragile:
- Works on ranged units that don't take direct hits (Storm Titan, Crystal Mage)
- Terrible on ground units that are in melee range of enemies
- Worse than Apex in every scenario. Only keep Berserker if you can't afford to re-roll for Apex.
Pro Tip: Berserker on Storm Titan is actually almost as good as Apex. Storm Titan sits at the back with 22-tile range — it never takes damage anyway, so the HP penalty is irrelevant. If you roll Berserker on Storm Titan, it's okay to keep it and save your Crystals.
Best Trait by Unit Type
Here's the cheat sheet:
| Unit Type | Best Trait | Second Best | Avoid |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ground DPS | Apex | Speedster | Tank, Guardian |
| Ranged DPS | Apex | Berserker | Tank, Guardian |
| AoE Clear | Apex | Speedster | Tank |
| Support/Healer | Emperor | Apex | Berserker |
| CC/Slow | Apex | Speedster | Tank, Berserker |
| Tank/Blocker | Tank | Guardian | Berserker |
Specific Unit Recommendations
| Unit | Optimal Trait | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Shadow Dragon | Apex | Maximizes the already-highest DPS in the game |
| Storm Titan | Apex (Berserker acceptable) | Pure damage, doesn't need HP |
| Celestial Qi Master | Emperor | Range extends healing aura to cover full team |
| Frost Empress | Apex | Increases slow from 35% to 50%, game-changing |
| Lava Admiral | Apex or Speedster | Both are great — Apex for raw AoE damage, Speedster for faster Eruption cycles |
| Dark Samurai | Speedster | Fast base attack speed benefits more from ATK Speed than raw DMG |
| Crystal Mage | Apex | Burst damage scales hardest with raw DMG increase |
| Spirit Fox | Emperor | Buffer aura range increase affects entire team |
| Blood Demon | Tank | Lifesteal + HP synergy makes it unkillable |
| Lightning Sage | Emperor | Chain range increases, hitting more targets |
Trait Crystal Sources
Trait Crystals are the rarest meaningful currency. Here's where to get them:
| Source | Crystals | Frequency |
|---|---|---|
| Infinite Mode Wave 50+ | 1-3 | Per run (scales with wave reached) |
| Infinite Mode Wave 100+ | 5-8 | Per run |
| Active Codes | 2-10 | Check codes page regularly |
| Weekly Event Shop | 3-5 | Weekly |
| Nightmare Stage First Clears | 2 per stage | One-time |
| Clan Rewards | 1-2 | Weekly |
| Daily Login (Day 7) | 3 | Weekly |
A committed player earns roughly 10-15 Trait Crystals per week. That's enough for 10-15 re-rolls — or about one unit getting a good trait if you're lucky.
Pro Tip: The most efficient Trait Crystal farming is pushing Infinite Mode as deep as possible. Wave 100+ runs give 5-8 Crystals, which is better than every other source combined. This is why investing traits in your Infinite Mode team first creates a positive feedback loop — better traits = deeper waves = more crystals = more traits.
Re-Roll Strategy — When to Stop
This is where most players make mistakes. They either stop too early (settling for Guardian on their DPS) or too late (burning 40 Crystals chasing Apex on their fourth-priority unit).
The Priority System
Roll traits in this order:
- Main DPS (Shadow Dragon / Storm Titan) — Roll until Apex. Do not stop for anything less.
- CC unit (Frost Empress) — Roll until Apex. The 50% slow is too important.
- Support (Celestial Qi Master) — Roll until Emperor. Apex is acceptable too.
- AoE (Lava Admiral) — Roll until Apex or Speedster. Either is fine.
- Flex slot — Roll until anything decent. Don't burn crystals here.
When to Accept a "Good Enough" Trait
- On your #1 and #2 priority: Never settle. Apex or keep rolling.
- On your #3 priority: Accept Emperor or Apex. Don't chase specifically for one.
- On your #4-5 priority: Accept Apex, Emperor, Speedster, or Berserker (if ranged). Stop at the first usable trait.
The Math of Knowing When to Stop
Let's say you have 20 Trait Crystals. You've already gotten Apex on Shadow Dragon (lucky you). Now you're rolling Frost Empress.
- Chance of Apex per roll: 8%
- Expected Crystals to roll Apex: ~13
- With 20 Crystals, you have about a 79% chance of hitting Apex before running out
Those are decent odds. Go for it.
But if you only have 5 Crystals left and you're rolling your fourth unit? The chance of hitting Apex in 5 rolls is only 34%. You're more likely to waste all 5 Crystals and end up with nothing. In that case, accept the first Speedster or Emperor you see and save the remaining Crystals for next week.
Warning: Trait rolling is the single biggest resource sink in Anime Defenders. I've seen players burn 50+ Crystals chasing Apex on a unit that didn't even need it. Prioritize your main DPS and CC units. Everything else can run on "good enough" traits until you're swimming in Crystals from Wave 100+ farming.
Trait Interactions and Hidden Mechanics
A few things the game doesn't tell you:
- Apex on Frost Empress changes the slow value, not just her damage. This is unique — no other CC unit has its CC effect scale with the DMG trait.
- Speedster affects ability cooldowns on some units (Lava Admiral's Eruption, Crystal Mage's burst) but NOT on others (Storm Titan's basic attack is already at max speed). Check per-unit before committing.
- Tank's -10% DMG applies after other bonuses. If you somehow have external DMG buffs (Spirit Fox aura), Tank's penalty reduces the buffed damage, not the base. This makes Tank even worse on DPS units than it looks on paper.
- Emperor's +15% Range is additive with base range, not multiplicative. On a unit with 10-tile base range, Emperor gives 11.5 tiles. On Storm Titan's 22-tile range, Emperor gives 25.3 tiles. The absolute gain is bigger on long-range units.
