What Are Traits?
Traits are random stat modifiers that you can roll on any unit. Each unit has one trait slot that can be re-rolled using Trait Burners, a limited resource. The trait you land on can increase a unit's effective power by 20-40% — or it can be completely useless.
As of Update 7/8 (Feb 2026), there are 8 traits in the game. Some are universally strong. Others are niche. A couple are borderline traps. This guide tells you which is which so you don't waste Trait Burners rolling for garbage.
All Traits Ranked
S-Tier Traits
Apex
- Effect: +25% damage, +10% range, +5% attack speed
- Why it's #1: Three stats in one. The 25% damage alone is competitive with pure damage traits, but the range and speed bonuses push Apex over the top. It's the best trait for almost every unit in the game.
- Best on: DPS units (Frieren, Killer Serious, Sukuna), AoE units (Madara, Gear 5 Luffy)
Emperor
- Effect: +30% damage, +10% range
- Why it's strong: Highest raw damage boost of any trait. The range bonus keeps your units hitting enemies earlier on the path. If you can't get Apex, Emperor is the next best thing on any DPS or AoE unit.
- Best on: Single-target units (Michishibo, Levi), any unit where attack speed doesn't matter
A-Tier Traits
Berserker
- Effect: +35% damage, -15% range
- Why it's A and not S: That 35% damage number looks amazing on paper. And it is — if your unit is placed in a position where the range penalty doesn't matter. But on maps with long straight paths, losing 15% range means fewer total hits per enemy pass. Net DPS increase is roughly +20% on average, which is below Emperor.
- Best on: Short-range DPS units that are already positioned close to the path (Sukuna, melee-range units)
- Avoid on: Long-range units (Frieren loses significant value from the range cut)
Pro Tip: Berserker is better than Emperor on exactly one type of unit: melee-range attackers who are already placed at minimum range. On everyone else, Emperor wins.
Speedster
- Effect: +25% attack speed, +10% movement speed for projectiles
- Why it's good: Attack speed is a multiplier on DPS. A unit that attacks 25% faster deals 25% more damage over time. The projectile speed also reduces "wasted" attacks on enemies that have already passed.
- Best on: Support units with cooldown-based abilities (Gojo Infinity — more stuns per minute), fast-attack units (Levi)
- Avoid on: Units with slow, high-damage single hits (burst units don't benefit from speed as much)
B-Tier Traits
Tank
- Effect: +40% HP, +15% defense
- Why it's B: ASTD is a tower defense game. Your units don't take damage in normal gameplay. Tank is only relevant in Raid Mode where units can be targeted, and even there, damage avoidance (via stuns from Gojo) is better than damage absorption.
- Best on: Frontline Raid Mode units (Ziek Beast Giant, All Might) — and only for Raid Mode
- Avoid on: Everyone else in every other mode
Vampiric
- Effect: +15% damage, heal 5% of damage dealt as HP
- Why it's niche: The healing is irrelevant outside of Raid Mode (same reason as Tank). The 15% damage boost is the lowest among damage-granting traits. You're paying for a healing effect you'll almost never use.
- Best on: Raid Mode specialists if you don't have Tank
- Avoid on: Story and Infinite Mode units — the damage bonus is too low
C-Tier Traits (Avoid)
Lucky
- Effect: +10% Gem bonus from stage completion, +5% rare drop rate
- Why it's bad: Sounds useful but the numbers are pathetic. 10% more Gems on a stage that gives 50 Gems means you get 55 Gems instead. Over 100 stages, that's 500 extra Gems — roughly one multi pull. You gave up 25-35% damage for one multi pull worth of Gems across 100 stages.
- Best on: Nobody. Genuinely nobody.
Cursed
- Effect: +50% damage, -30% range, -20% attack speed
- Why it's a trap: 50% damage sounds incredible. But the combined range and speed penalties are devastating. Net DPS after accounting for fewer hits and shorter reach is actually lower than Emperor on most units. The math kills it.
- Best on: Theoretically interesting for units placed at melee range on tight map corners. In practice, Berserker does the job better with fewer downsides.
Warning: Cursed is the most common "noob trap" trait. New players see +50% damage and assume it's the best. Run the numbers before you commit. A 6-star Frieren with Cursed does less total damage per map than Frieren with Apex. The community has tested this extensively.
Best Traits by Unit Role
| Role | Best Trait | Second Best | Avoid |
|---|---|---|---|
| DPS (ranged) | Apex | Emperor | Cursed, Tank |
| DPS (melee) | Apex | Berserker | Lucky, Tank |
| AoE | Apex | Emperor | Cursed (range loss kills AoE) |
| Single Target | Emperor | Apex | Speedster (doesn't help burst) |
| Support | Speedster | Apex | Tank, Lucky, Cursed |
Trait Burner Strategy
Trait Burners are the only way to re-roll traits. They're scarce. A free-to-play player earns roughly 8-12 Trait Burners per week from dailies, events, and Infinite Mode rewards. Here's how to spend them wisely.
Rule 1: Only roll on 5-star+ units
Traits are percentage-based. +25% damage on a 3-star unit with 10,000 base DPS is +2,500 DPS. The same trait on a 6-star unit with 100,000 base DPS is +25,000 DPS. Ten times the impact for the same Trait Burner cost.
Rule 2: Stop at A-tier traits
The probability of rolling Apex is 12.5% (1 in 8 traits). The expected cost to get Apex is 8 Trait Burners. But variance means you could spend 20+ and not see it. If you roll Emperor or Berserker (on an appropriate unit), stop. The marginal improvement from Emperor to Apex is roughly 5-8% more effective DPS. That's not worth another 8+ Trait Burners.
Rule 3: Prioritize your primary DPS
Your main damage dealer benefits most from traits because they're responsible for the majority of your team's damage output. Roll traits on your carry first, then AoE, then single-target, then support last.
Rule 4: Never roll during a Trait Burner drought
Keep a minimum reserve of 5 Trait Burners at all times. You never know when you'll pull a new S-tier unit that needs an immediate trait. Blowing your entire stock chasing Apex on your AoE unit and then pulling Frieren with zero Burners left feels terrible.
Pro Tip: The expected Trait Burner cost to get at least an A-tier trait (Apex, Emperor, Berserker, or Speedster) is approximately 2 Burners (50% of traits are A-tier or above). Getting any good trait is cheap. Getting the specific best trait is expensive. Know the difference.
The Re-Roll Math
Let's quantify the expected cost for each outcome:
| Target | Probability | Expected Burners | Worth it? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Any S-tier (Apex or Emperor) | 25% | 4 | Yes — always aim for at least this |
| Specifically Apex | 12.5% | 8 | Only on your #1 carry at 6-star |
| Any A-tier+ | 50% | 2 | Absolute minimum — always achievable |
| Any non-C-tier | 75% | 1.3 | Stop if you get anything B+ on secondary units |
The takeaway: Spend 2-4 Burners per unit to land an A-tier+ trait. Only go deep (8+ Burners) on your single most important unit.
When to Re-Roll an Existing Trait
Sometimes your unit already has a trait but it's not ideal. Should you re-roll?
- Current trait is C-tier (Lucky/Cursed): Yes, always re-roll. Any result is an improvement.
- Current trait is B-tier (Tank/Vampiric): Re-roll if the unit is your primary carry. Keep if it's a secondary unit.
- Current trait is A-tier (Berserker/Speedster): Only re-roll if the unit is your 6-star main carry AND you have 10+ Trait Burners to spare. The marginal gain is small.
- Current trait is S-tier but wrong S-tier (Emperor when you want Apex): Don't. The 5-8% improvement is not worth the expected 8 Burner cost when Emperor is already excellent.
Warning: Re-rolling a good trait and getting a worse one is a real risk. There's no "lock" or "protection" system. If your Frieren has Emperor and you re-roll chasing Apex, you might land on Cursed. The game doesn't care about your feelings. Only re-roll when you can afford to eat a bad result.
Final Thoughts
Traits separate a good team from a great one. But they're the last optimization layer, not the first. Get your units to high star levels, build a balanced team composition, and then worry about perfect trait rolls. A 6-star Killer Serious with Berserker trait will carry you through 95% of content. Chasing Apex on him is a luxury, not a necessity.
